Tallentire Wind Farm

CONSTRUCTION PLAN

Site Entrance and Access Track Preparation

The entrance to Tallentire Wind Farm will be located on the A595 between the Redmains junctions. To minimise disruption to other road users during the construction and turbine delivery, a traffic management plan has been developed and agreed in advance with Allerdale Borough Council and the police. Initially when work starts at the wind farm, our first task will be creating a safe entrance to the site which will take 3-4 weeks. The layby off the A595 has been closed in preparation for this work (and will remain closed for the next 12 months). Traffic management measures, such as temporary traffic lights, to ensure the safety of the construction staff and other road users might be required for short periods whilst we undertake this work. These will be arranged between 9:00 and 17:00 and will be limited to short durations to minimise disruption. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused to local residents during this period. After the site entrance works are complete we will be preparing the access tracks on site to allow the turbines to be delivered, erected and serviced. At Tallentre we will be constructing approximately 6.9 km (4.3 miles)of tracks.

Turbine Foundations

The turbine foundations need to be completed prior to the turbines arriving on site. The 6 turbines at Tallentire Wind Farm will stand on concrete foundations. Once the turbines towers arrive on site they will be bolted into place. Work on the foundations will start in summer 2012. These solid foundations give the turbines a firm base on which to stand for the 25 year life of the wind farm. The top of the concrete foundation lies up to one metre below the normal ground surface and is filled in with soil, so the land right up to the base of the turbine can be used.

Building of control room/substation compound

In addition to the access tracks and the 6 turbines, there will be a number of support structures put upon the site. Some, like the construction offices and stores, will be temporary. Others like the control building and substation, which takes the electricity from the turbines and feeds it into the grid, will be permanent.

Electrical works

The on site electrical infrastructure including power and fibre optic cabling and electrical equipment in the control building and substation compound are installed on site. All cabling is buried to reduce visual impact.

Turbine - delivery and erection

The turbines are delivered to the site in parts and assembled on site using a crane. The delivery of the blades, towers and nacelles for Tallentire Wind Farm is expected to begin in January 2013. The nacelles are the boxlike structures at the top of the tower, which house the gearbox and generator that enable th emovement of the blades to be converted into clean, green electricity. The turbine parts will be transported on special heavy goods vehicles with a suitable escort vehicle. We will keep the community fully informed on the delivery process. All the turbines are then put through a rigorous testing process before they are commissioned and start supplying electricity to grid.
